Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • pinch of ground cinnamon
  • pinch of ground cloves
  • 1 egg yolk (room temperature)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • whipped cream (optional)
  • extra ground cinnamon or nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan over medium/medium-low heat, combine milk, cream, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves. Whisk frequently and heat until almost boiling.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together egg yolk and sugar until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the hot milk mixture to the egg mixture, whisking thoroughly with each addition.
  4. Return the combined mixture to the saucepan and cook while whisking constantly until it reaches 160 degrees F.
  5. Remove from heat, whisk in vanilla, and serve with optional whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg.
