Ingredients
- 1 large egg (separated into yolk and white)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (freshly grated)
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1-2 tablespoons bourbon (optional)
Instructions
- Separate the egg yolk and set aside the egg white for later use.
- In a bowl, whisk the egg yolk and sugar until the mixture becomes fluffy and pale yellow.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk, whipping cream, and freshly grated nutmeg until it steams, but before it boils.
- Temper the eggs by slowly adding the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture while whisking continuously.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan and heat over medium, stirring constantly until it thickens without boiling.
- Remove from heat, stir in the vanilla extract and bourbon, if desired.
- Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Serve with a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg.
