Ingredients

  • 1 large egg (separated into yolk and white)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (freshly grated)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1-2 tablespoons bourbon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Separate the egg yolk and set aside the egg white for later use.
  2. In a bowl, whisk the egg yolk and sugar until the mixture becomes fluffy and pale yellow.
  3. In a saucepan, heat the milk, whipping cream, and freshly grated nutmeg until it steams, but before it boils.
  4. Temper the eggs by slowly adding the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture while whisking continuously.
  5. Return the mixture to the saucepan and heat over medium, stirring constantly until it thickens without boiling.
  6. Remove from heat, stir in the vanilla extract and bourbon, if desired.
  7. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  8. Serve with a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg.
