Ingredients
- 1 large egg (separated into yolk and white)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (freshly grated)
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons bourbon (optional)
Instructions
- Separate the egg yolk and egg white into two different bowls.
- Whisk the egg yolk and sugar together until the mixture is pale yellow and fluffy.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk, whipping cream, and nutmeg until just before it boils.
- Spoon a ladle full of the hot milk mixture and whisk it into the egg mixture to temper the eggs.
- Slowly drizzle the egg mixture back into the saucepan while whisking.
- Heat over medium, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens. Do not let it boil.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and bourbon.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Serve with a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg.
