Ingredients

  • 1 large egg (separated into yolk and white)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (freshly grated)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Separate the egg yolk and egg white into two different bowls.
  2. Whisk the egg yolk and sugar together until the mixture is pale yellow and fluffy.
  3. In a saucepan, heat the milk, whipping cream, and nutmeg until just before it boils.
  4. Spoon a ladle full of the hot milk mixture and whisk it into the egg mixture to temper the eggs.
  5. Slowly drizzle the egg mixture back into the saucepan while whisking.
  6. Heat over medium, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens. Do not let it boil.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and bourbon.
  8. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  9. Serve with a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg.
